I'm curious to know, which Bible do you prefer to read? do you read only catholic translations? if not, why do you read evangelical or orthodox ones?

Do the eastern catholic parishes use the NAB or, like the anglican use parishes, the RSV?

I prefer to read the English Standard Version becuase it renders the text into a modern language but reminiscent of the poetry of the King James Version. The ESV also contains all books of the Catholic and Orthodox Canons.

The NAB is fine, but I don't like to wording; it's not poetic. Scripture should be pleasant to the ears; afterall it was told and re-told long before it was ever written down.

The Byzantine parishes I have been to, use both the RSV or NAB, it just depends on the preference of the priest I suspect.

The NAB is not "fine"--it is by far the worst translation on the market now, only inches ahead of paraphase Bibles. It's significant that the NAB is mandated for liturgical use by the USCCB (which holds the copyright), but few Catholic biblical scholars use it in their scholarly work.

I tend to follow what the Greek Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches use.

My UGCC parish uses several translations, including the RSV (but not the NAB). The psalter we use has been assembled by our priest from a variety of sources. It is faithful to the Septuagint Greek, and is in modern English. Unfortunately, it is not published and consists of a couple of well-used ring binders.

I would like to find a nicely printed psalter, faithful to the Septuagint, in modern English. Is such a publication available? I have been unable to find one.

I do not like the NAB and never use it. It is not a faithful translation and is full of gender neutral language. If fear that the only reason the NAB continues in use is that the US bishops derive considerable revenue from it.

Try the translation made by Archimandrite Lazarus (Moore). It is available free as a download or for a hardcover copy, for a fee, from LuLu.

His translation of the Gospels is also available, harbound, from the same source.

Not to hijack the thread, but are there "approved" or otherwise RSV versions of the Apostols and Gospel Books for Byzantine Catholic churches? If so, where do you get 'em?

The Byzantine Seminary Press sells the Gospel Book and Epistle Book using the 1970 NAB. Alleluia Press sell the same using the Confraternity Version.

Any Bible that includes the line "and the upshot was. . . " deserves to be burned, publicly.

Do all EC's use the NAB? -- I guess that would be for those in the U.S.
Are they allowed to use a different version?
