It is true, of course, that an authentic vocation to the priesthood comes from God. But it is also true that God does not force anyone to follow such a vocation. So it is not necessarily false, let alone foolish, to suggest that the insistence on mandatory celibacy could have something to do with a lack of priests.
I can speak directly to that, Father. I've said it before, and will say it again: celibacy is the *only* reason I never sought to enroll in the seminary. I nearly married the first time I was close, and did marry the second time. There is *at least* one less Catholic priest as a dierect consequence of celibacy. That seems to me to be the Church's loss. All the more confusing as I learned this weekend that the Byzantine Catholic parish in my hometown will receive a married Byzantine Catholic priest with a family following Pascha. He is from Slovakia and was ordained there as part of the Diocese of Kosice. This means that both the UGCC and BCC parishes here have married priests and families. (As a sidenote, it also means that of the six parishes linked to Slovakia, Ukraine and Galicia in Broome County, New York four have clergy born in the old country (both OCA, the UOC and now the BCC parish) and the UGCC priest was educated in Ukraine and married a Ukrainian woman.) This speaks loudly about vocations in America from both the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic point of view and probably shows that celibacy is not the only reason for a lack of American vocations. However, if the Byzantine Catholic bishops in America can accept married clergy from Europe, why do they still refuse to challenge Rome and discriminate against American vocations? That is something that I just don't get. One thing for sure, I know that there are many graves spinning at both of our parish cemeteries. On a humorous note, I guess that means we can't call our BCC neighbors 'tselibats' any more and they can't call us 'indypindy'....FYI that's a joke that you have to be an 'oldtimer' to get! lol

I can't help but think so, to, but surely I'm biased  I had two competing calls, and I didn't understand how they could be compatible at the time (though, realistically, the only path at the time probably would have been Melkite. But *had* it happened, it would most probably would have meant an married EC priest as a professor in an RC university, starting in the mid to late '90s. Such visible vocations lead to more, and. . . Maybe that wasn't Meant, and I'm supposed to figure out how to fund the next generatrion . . .

As I said, I certainly understand and speak Ukrainian. This arrived today: Sorry, as far I know these videos aren't out on in fine quality yet. The best I could do is download the videos posted on the UGCC website ( http://www.ugcc.org.ua/1725.0.html) and burn them onto a DVD. Just curious who directed you to me? I don't mind making a DVD for you, but I won't be able to get around to it until after Pascha. Any more questions? Father Serge

As I said, I certainly understand and speak Ukrainian. This arrived today: Sorry, as far I know these videos aren't out on in fine quality yet.
