Is there anything codified in one document? It would be an excellent reference document.

Anxiously awaiting a reply.
Fr. Deacon Paul

There is no Eastern Orthodox "Code of Canon Law" along the lines of the 1917 (CIC), 1983 (CIC), and 1990 (CCEO) issued by the Roman Catholic Church. Instead the Eastern Orthodox Churches have various collections of canons (ecumenical and local) including the Pedalion compiled by St. Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain in the early 19th century, but even the canons within that particular collection are of varying degrees of authority. The most authoritative canons for the Eastern Orthodox Churches would be those issued by the ecumenical councils, which for them would include the canons of Trullo.

Fr. Deacon Paul,

The “Orthodox Code of Canon Law” was codified by the Ecumenical Councils. For example, Trullo 3 prohibits the second marriage of a priest or deacon; Trullo 90 confirms Nicea and prohibits kneeling on Sundays; et cetera. You also have the local councils and Holy Fathers: Cyril, Basil, Gregory, et cetera. Then you have the commentaries that begin in the 12th century like Zonaras or Balsamon. The Pedalion is available online, which might be what you are looking for: http://www.allmercifulsavior.com/Liturgics/The_Rudder_or_Pedalion.pdf

There are a number of recent books ‘about’ Orthodox Canon Law, but they are really introductions or guides to interpretation and not really ‘codifications’ -- which are the traditional sources mentioned above.

The file will download but can't be opened on my system. Other PDF files work fine. Are any of you having the same problem? Thanks.

My brothers Seraphim, Theophilus, and Apotheoun,

CHRIST IS RISEN!

Thank you for the link. It took some time but I was able to download it and save it. I will review it,,,,2000 years of canons. I see some are very old and I doubt that they are regarded as current....like women not being permitted to sing or talk in church.

I apologize for straying from the original topic...my thoughts on the interview were much the same as the first posts; a bit insensitive, but we Eastern Catholics are used to it.

Dear Fr. Deacon Paul:

I didn't feel it was insensitive but perhaps that is just me not paying close attention. In any case I am going to listen to the interview again.
