Does anyone know of an Byzantine or Orthodox
Church in Downtown Chicago? Or maybe a chapel? The Roam Catholic Churches here are too modern my my taste.

Thanks.

Dear John,

The Ukrainian Catholic Church of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha in Chicago is one of the most traditional Eastern Catholic churches and communities around.

Their services are entirely in Ukrainian, but, if you can put up with that, they are an excellent model for Eastern Catholic worship.

Alex

If you're interested in a more traditional Roman Church in Chicago, consider checking out st. John Cantius Parish, also the home of the new Society of St. John Cantius.

The parish web site is http://www.cantius.org

The Church itself is absolutely beautiful. Their motto is "Restoration of the Sacred."

Dear Ignatius,

A Church that has the Divine Office! Now that is (spiritual) class!!

But I still think he should at least visit St Volodymyr and Olha's, just to see what the PINNACLE of Byzantine worhsip is .

One question (in all seriousness), what do you personally feel about what seems like a "bi-ritual" (Tridentine and NO) parish? Does it bother you?

Alex

Not at all.

In fact, I wish MORE places would do it (I know of a couple other parishes that offer the Tridentine Mass weekly. But I honsetly don't know why every diocese doesn't have AT LEAST one parish that has Mass according to both forms on a DAILY basis.)

The only thing that bothers me when it comes to the liturgy is BAD liturgy (and homilies!). Come on folks, read what's in black, do what's in red and everyone goes home happy! (Is that so much to ask for?)

GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!
GLORY TO HIM FOREVER!

HOLY ANNUCIATION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD Byzantine Catholic church is in Lockport, IL. This is a suburb of Chicago. Fr. Thomas Loya is pastor and he's a FANTASTIC priest and does a very traditional liturgy.

From what I understand, this is a "new" parish; i.e. a new church build but 3 smaller communities that merged into one.

Haven't been there personally but used to attend Fr.Loya's liturgies when he was in Solon,OH. I think Sharon should chime in about now....

The Annunciation of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen, Illinois is my Church and Father Loya is my pastor. It is a great and beautiful Church, but it is nowhere near downtown Chicago. But please do come and visit sometime.

Here's a link of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Chicago IL. I think it's such a gorgeous Byzantine Church. Sure St. John Cantius church is beautiful.

But check it out. It's AWE-some!

Dear spdundas,

Don't you just love those Americanized Ukrainians?

If this is the result of the U.S. melting pot, I say, "heat up the water some more!"

Dear Alex,

We in the Ukrainian States of America deeply appreciate your work in the brabch office of our Chamber of Commerce.

Father Ivan Krotec, pastor of St. Volodymyr & Olha Parish, sings the Divine Liturgy on the CD "Liturgy 2000", which was composed in honor of the recent Jubilee Year 2000. I am very impressed with this recording, which I purchased at Holy Family Shrine in Washington last fall.

John D,
There are Orthodox Churches down on LaSalle Street. Right across the street from the Moody Bible Institute is an OCA Orthodox Cathederal. I believe you may find Bishop Job there. Unless you would like to visit my Church of St George-the Shrine of the Weeping Icon in Cicero, IL located on Roosevelt and 60th Ct(west of Austin). I hope this helps. There is also another Antiochian Church north of downtown (Pulaski & Newport)called All Saints. The pastor there is the Archpriest Patrick Reardon. He is a great and learned man and well-known for many articles and some books he has written.

Dear Robert,

I had no idea you belonged to the Church with the Blessed Shrine of our Lady!

My neighbour who is a member of St George Antiochian Orthodox Church near Toronto procured a copy of the Miraculous Weeping Icon of Cicero which I have enshrined on my Icon Corner.

How lucky and spiritually blessed you are to be so close to so miraculous a Shrine!

Alex

Dear Alex,
Thank you for your kind words. I am curious about the name of your neighbor who belonged to my Church. Recently, one of our female members moved to Toronto and attends St George there. If you ever come out to Chicago give me a holler. I'll give you a tour. I may come out to Toronto with my wife and attend St. George there sometime this summer. Currently, I am involved in revising my Church's website. Once it's up you can visit and view the Weeping Icon online and the rest of our beautiful Church via virtual reality.
