It looks like the UGCC Catechism has been released today, the Nativity of the Prophet and Forerunner, John the Baptist. smile Can anyone read this and give us a summary of the news?

likethethief,

If you use Google Chrome as your browser, it can automatically translate the pages into English. Although not a perfect translation, it is understandable.

Just a suggestion.

Is the UGCC catechism yet to be translated to the other languages or has that already been completed?

I am looking forward to getting a copy.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church's Catechism, and in the future its Compendium, will be translated into five languages: Russian, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Polish. Translations will be done in those countries where the above-mentioned languages are mother tongues, and the Catechetical Commission will do the final proofreading.

“The translation in itself is not an easy endeavor, especially if one deals with theological and religious terminology. We will make sure that the proper vocabulary is used, which will also be understood in other countries. It will be the responsibility of our commission and of our Committee on Writing the Catechism. The synod entrusted us to carry out this project,” said S. Luisa Tsyupa about further plans of the working group on the Catechism in her interview to the UGCC Information Department.

So they are just starting the translation today? Which means this could still be a year or two or more from being in English?

I would imagine, to do it right (and it is far harder than many believe) will require at least a year just for the translation, followed by an additional year of review and corrections. If, when the translation was completed, the Church would put both the Ukrainian and English versions on line together, it could harness a wider range of talents than just those available within the ranks of the UGCC clergy and associated academics.

Old translator's maxim: You want it bad, you get it bad.

But if you want it good, then, as my grandmother used to say, "Get out of the kitchen. It will be ready when it's ready".
