Can Eastern Christians and Muslims live together? What do we know about the historic encounters between them? What is the status of present-day relations in countries as diverse as Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Armenia, Russia, and elsewhere? Watch over the coming weeks for a new series on recent books discussing the encounter between Eastern Christianity and Islam, starting here: http://easternchristianbooks.blogspot.com/2011/07/muslim-christian-dialogue.html

The 9th-century House of Wisdom in Baghdad can serve as an encouraging example of the Muslim pursuit of Logos, and a model to which modern Islam might turn in seeking ways of taking up its part in the contemporary conversation with the 'West'.

Then - not that there is a causal link between them - the relative harmony of post-Conquest Damascus, and even Mohammed's regard for places like the Monastery of St Catherine of Sinai signal similar possibilities.

I would look forward to any scholarly work on the matter.

No study of the Church under Islam can be considered complete without reference to Bat Yeor's monumental The Decline of Eastern Christianity: From Jihad to Dhimmitude. Relying on first hand accounts, both Christian and Muslim, she reconstructs the reality of the Christian Church under Islamic domination, showing how, through combinations of incentive and oppression, a once dynamic, multi-ethnic Christian civilization was reduced to an embattled remnant fighting for survival.
