Hello I know this discussion is pretty much ended but just read this and thought it may be of interest to some here. This is from my local Orthodox church's newsletter from the Priest of the local church to his congregation:

LETS TALK ABOUT CHAIRS!
Once again a reference to standing in church and the chairs in one of my sermons has led to frantic questions and unseemly comments by some people.

Once again I will explain the "chair" situation.

No one who needs a place to sit will ever be denied a place to sit!

The elderly, sick, injured, those unable to stand, will always have a place to sit. I can't make it anymore clear then that.

Sitting in church during the divine services is not an authentic expression of Orthodox worship. The present practice of sitting in church is a reduction of our traditions to accomodate laziness and pride, the attitudes and opinions of some clergy and laity notwithstanding.

Let me say again, there are no plans to remove all of the chairs from this church, however, I shall never cease to instruct people that pious Orthodox stand in the Presence of God eagerly anticipating His coming in Holy Communion. They do not lounge waiting for snacks to be served.

Comments about leaving the church reflect more on the person than on the issue.
