Eugenics is alive and well in the "civilized" world. There is an influential segment of the academia and environmental groups who believe that the earth is overpopulated and must be pruned to allow the "worthy" minority. They will save the earth and weed out the ignorant and defective peoples who deprive the earth and themselves of precious resources. This is done under the banner of eliminating poverty. was very prevalent. Ah. I guess my question should have been more specific, i.e. US and UN started a depopulation war? Perhaps I took the rhetoric too literally, but I see what you are meaning.

Population growth has already stabilized around the world. Contrary to the mainstream consensus, we aren't at 7 billion, and probably never will reach it.
