A startling & troubling book, "Architects of the Culture of Death" (Ignatius Press, 2004 ISBN 1-58617-016-3) provides short biographies and analysis of the rationale of people who have contributed significantly to today's pervasive societal acquiescence in abortion, euthanasia and other similar unappetising and sordid activities.

Among those people addressed by the book are Ayn Rand, Margaret Sanger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Alan Guttmacher, Alfred Kinsey and Jack Kevorkian.

It's an eye-opener. To put it mildly...

Rand seems gratuitous.

How so? Wasn't she espousing pro-choice selfish atheism?

I don't remember Rand saying much about abortion one way or the other. As for what Rand espoused, it would be better to deal with the fullness of her philosophical thought, instead of the exaggerations of her less capable followers or the caricatures of her opponents. Regarding atheism, how do you deal with the not-so-rare anomaly of the pro-life subspecies of same?
