Dear Forum Members,
Glory be to Jesus Christ!

I have seen Orthodox monks and nuns wearing their mantles-mantiya/mandya at various times. What is the rule regarding wearing the mantle? Is it worn only for the Divine Liturgy?
Also, what is it's symbolism?
Many thanks!

The wikipedia article is mostly accurate.

It is only worn by stavrophore monks and up in the Russian tradition. The Greeks wear it rarely. It can be worn at any liturgical service, or outside them, though in practice most monastics would only wear it during divine services; it would be unlikely they would wear it when not wearing the kamilavka (i.e. on less formal occasions). It's not a strict rule even in Church though and they might dispense with it if it was a hot day or something. Oh, and technically it is only worn in a monk's home monastery according to some sets of rules. Outside of it he/ she wears the outer Riassa only.
