The head of Austria’s Roman Catholic church has agreed to give one of his parish churches to Orthodox Christians, after an appeal against the decision by local Catholics was rejected by the Vatican on 11 November.

I always have mixed feelings about things like this. On the one hand, Cardinal Schonborn "... had promised to donate the church after determining it could no longer be maintained by its declining Roman Catholic congregation;" but then--they always say that. frown

However, it's encouraging that this is a donation, and no money was exchanged in the transfer. I certainly have no argument with the statement that "Roman Catholics should help sister churches in a spirit of Christian solidarity," and that it is better to give churches to them than sell them for use as restaurants or discos. smile

I'm not surprised by the Cardinal's decision, which I think reflects his history of concern for and interest in the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox.

Many years,

Neil
