This really has astonished me

Quote:
Голова Управління мусульман Кавказу шейх-уль-іслам Аллахшукюр Паша-заде вручив Патріарху Московському і Всія Русі орден "Шейх уль-Іслам" – найвищу нагороду мусульман Азербайджану..........

from a Google translation
Quote:
Chairman of Caucasian Muslims Office Sheikh-ul-Islam Pasha-zade Allahshukyur presented the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus Order "Sheikh ul-Islam" - the highest award of the Muslims of Azerbaijan.........

These meaningless honorifics are exchanged all the time, going back to the days of the Byzantines. It's called "playing nice".

The Patriarch should consider himself a lucky man in that they didn't "award" him with a gift of exploding, death-dealing rockets and bombs.

Those folks have a deserved reputation of being mighty generous with those kinds of "gift".

People try not to get the Russians too mad at them. They carry grudges, and they fight dirty. The Chechens are an exception, because they're all crazy--have been since the time of Turgenev.

Princes Philip and Charles have many awards from Muslim leaders (also from native Americans, indigenous Australians, chieftainship of a few African tribes etc). It's called diplomacy. At least Islamic leaders have baubles they can give out; imagine if they pursued the time honoured CIA tactic of handing out weapons to people they liked momentarily (the Taliban anyone)?
