I know we have a few exceptionally dedicated and talented cantors in our midst, including the Administrator of this forum, so I sadly share this news with my brother and sister cantors, as well as other faithful, so that all may be informed in a timely manner.

George Kmeck, the cantor and choir director at St. Mary's in Jersey City, NJ (Byzantine Ruthenian Eparchy of Passaic) since 1971, fell asleep in the Lord yesterday. He was a student and protégé of +Prof. John Kahanick, the renowned cantor and choir director of the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel until his death in 1997. Despite the prominence of his mentor and teacher, George was well regarded as master of our plainchant tradition and a skilled choir director in his own right. His choir at St. Mary's has over the years produced and made available several high quality recordings of the Divine Liturgy in English and OCS, para-liturgical hymns and other great works of interest. These recordings have been widely distributed over the years, and are frequently advertised in the Eparchy's newspaper.

George was highly respected by clergy, cantors and faithful alike. It was natural for many cantors in this part of the Eparchy to consider him a leader, one who "carried the torch" in many respects after + Prof. Kahanick passed away, most especially with regard to the choral tradition. Ironically, he died while the Funeral Divine Liturgy for +Bishop Andrew was taking place. Not so long ago, every cantor and priest who would have shown up in the choir loft for such an important occasion would have instinctively deferred to George's leadership.

He was a great man, and great cantor and a great asset to our Byzantine Ruthenian Church.

Please remember him and his family in your prayers!

Eternal memory! Vicnaya jemu pamjat!

May the memory of the Lord's servant, the Cantor George, be eternal and may the Lord reward him for his many years of faithful service to God's Church and its people.

Cantor George was a wonderful man who exuded love for the Lord and for His Church.

In blessed repose, grant, O Lord, eternal rest to Your servant, the Cantor George, and may his memory be eternal
