Has anyone come across a particularly rewarding resource or author regarding Eastern European History? When I think of Western European History there are tons of resources and authors. Quite recently I have been following a series on the Cable Station "The Military Channel". The series is called "Nazi Collaborators" and very recently there has been quite a bit about Croatia, the Ukraine and the Baltic States. Its fascinating stuff but it also would help to have a better grasp of the Historical context of these peoples. Thoughts?
Best Wishes,

Bruce

Bruce, the topic is so broad that your best bet is to hit a big bookstore, and study the history section until you are able to formulate the idea of what countries, time periods of or specific events interest you most. Starting there, you will find references to other sources that will catch you eye, in the store books. It is an enormous chunk of history, libraries and libraries of books, films, museums, accounts...

Actually, there are a few brief overviews of Byzantium and Christian history that I would recommend as a starting point, on the principle that to get to the end you musty start at the beginning; having got a general overview, they will have more specific references in them for periods that take your fancy.

These book should book in everyone's library:

http://www.amazon.com/Early-Church-Pengu...mp;sr=1-1-spell

In my opinion however, the definitive work on Eastern history in the first millennium (suprisingly undated) is Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It is massive, and contains chapters on things unrelated to Church history, but is also I believe a must for the library of any educated person.

Abridged version here (but really you need the full 3 volumes too).
