Why??

Because the bold don't always live to be old.

Many years,

Neil

The actual quote is "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots". That one is true, because the ground always wins. But, in general, there are lots of old, bold men.

I confess when reading these words I immediately heard in my head Epistle (The Word of the Lord) from Leonard Bernstein's MASS, lyrics by Schwartz:
You can lock up the bold men,
Go and lock up your bold men and hold men in tow
You can stifle all adventure for a century or so.
Smother hope before it’s risen, watch it wizen like a gourd,
But you cannot imprison the Word of the Lord; no you cannot imprison the Word of the Lord! ...

Very timely, considering that the Lutheran Old Testament lesson for this coming Sunday is the entire book of Jonah, including the parable of the gourd.
