St. Satyrus I read in a new book from what I gather refused communion with schismatical bishops (when ship wrecked on an island) as St. Ambrose stated. I read this fact in a book I purchased home Fr. Adrian Fortescue, great doctor on the Eastern Churches is quoted in the book to stating this. Interesting stuff.

Fr. Adrian Fortescue, great doctor on the Eastern Churches is quoted in the book to stating this. Interesting stuff. I would not go as far as saying Fr. Adrian was a "great doctor on the Eastern Churches." While Fr. Adrian's book The Greek Fathers is a good introduction he at times has an semiarrogant tone to his works (especially talking about the Orthodox Churches).

A great deal of his scholarship has also been superseded. I would say his work has become more of an historical artifact to be studied for what it reveals about the attitudes of Fortescue and his time, than what it actually reveals about the Eastern Churches.

I have all of Fortescue's Works and most of them can be found online, I found him to be exceptional in scholarship and theology on the Uniate, Eastern and Oriental Churches.

I recently purchased this work, originally in Latin and printed in Rome, now in English. It is a compendium of quotes from Eastern and Latin Church Fathers on Intercommunion...sometimes the quotes are harsh, however they do fill a scholarly road in what was once the modus operandi. Rome Has Spoken Before Cardinal Stickler passed who was working at this title with the author he gave it two thumbs up!

Citing Stickler here probably won't win the book many fans. But I do note that if I take the first quote (Canon 44) at face value, then either we must conclude that the Pope should be excommunicated, or that the Orthodox are not heretics. If I take the second quote (Canon 39) at face value, then the Codex Canonorum and the CCOE are either both heretical or, again, the Orthodox aren't heretics.
But, if the Orthodox aren't heretics, what are we to make of the various Latin "dogmas" they either did not receive or simply reject outright (and principally I'm thinking of Pastor aeternus)? For is not the very definition of heretic a person or group that rejects the dogmatic propositions of the Church?
