Bishop David Zubik, of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, said the appointment of his new colleague was an answer to prayer. The two have been good friends for years through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
"I'm elated," Bishop Zubik said. "He's kind of a homespun guy, with a quick, dry sense of humor. He's very pastoral in his approach. Having been bishop of Van Nuys and Passaic gives him a broad sense of the country. Now coming to Pittsburgh I think he will be a wonderful, wonderful gift, certainly for his own people, but we will be great co-workers together as Catholics of the East and the West."
