At first the link didn't work for me, but now it does...and it does sound very good! I think you could probably add shrimp or scallops (for Lent) into it as well!

I like the cashews...which ofcourse Asian cooking uses.

I have started buying big bags of almonds and walnuts and use them in everything--salads, desserts, cooked veggies, rice dishes, lentil dishes,...everything...LOL

Not only are they healthy, but seeing that we are on the Church Fast more days of the year than not, it also adds crunch and texture, but also makes everything a bit more filling and satisfying..

I have fallen in love with salted pistachios lately (on their own), but unfortunately they are expensive and they get eaten quickly. I understand that they are not if you are blessed to live in Southern California.

Pistachios are ridiculously priced - and I have to say that the work involved in shelling them generally overcomes my liking of them.

Pine nuts, which are important in Middle Eastern cooking, are presently priced pretty steeply as well - and I can't think of a ready solution to that, short of playing squirrel, gathering pinecones, and harvesting my own. As my neighbors already think I'm a tad nutty, I feel no need to further confirm their suspicions.

Lol. Do you know in North America Native Ameriacans hole the rights to harvest of pine nuts?

In the United States, pine nuts are mainly harvested by Native Americans, particularly the Uto-Aztecan: Shoshone, Paiute and Hopi, and Washoe tribes.[4] Certain treaties negotiated by tribes and laws in Nevada guarantee Native Americans' right to harvest pine nuts.[5]. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_nut.

Pecans are also very good for hands! Especially Massage Therapists and Chiropractors. http://www.ilovepecans.org/nutrition.html.

Ever hear of 'pine nut mouth'??? (See FDA acknowledgment in the above link)

I have eaten pine nuts my whole life, but all it took was eating some from China (Costco) one time to give it to me.

The FDA knows about it, and it is all over the internet, because so many have experienced it with Asian pine nuts. They actually look different than the ones that are harvested in Greece, Italy, Turkey, etc. (which are expensive, but worth it because they don't seem to give 'pine mouth')

There are many theories about the Chinese pine nuts, mine being that if they were actually edible ones, they would have been used in the local cooking there, just like they have been used in traditional southern Italian, Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Others think it might be some kind of unregulated (since it isn't in the U.S.) pesticide or poison to keep them from spoiling.

Anyway, they may be cheaper, but beware! It is NOT a pleasant experience, and unknowing people have undergone tests thinking that they had a brain tumour--because they were so frightened.

Even doctors have thought that when they themselves experienced it, until, thanks to the internet, they were able to find out the true culprit (having eaten pine nuts from China/Trader Jo's/Costco) the day or two before. Trader Jo's now has a warning on their bags that certain individuals are 'allergic', but that is partially hogwash since everyone agrees it has to do with the place of origin. The wierd thing is that it doesn't always happen, and it doesn't always happen to everyone eating from the same bag...but I am still suspicious as to what 'medley' of inedible pine nuts might be in the bag.

Anyway, keep this in mind if it ever happens to any of you! It isn't fatal, but very disturbing...(metallic taste in back of mouth whenever you eat something for a week to two weeks--every food tastes awful and metallic.)

If it does happen to anyone here, a remedy I read which helped me atleast be able to eat food was to take a tablespoon or two of freshly squeezed lemon juice RIGHT before my meal. Another person suggested ouzo!! In both cases, it seems to be the temporary neutralizing effect which helps for about 15 minutes.

There's nothing like some nuts -- it's hard to find a kind of nut that isn't good -- but they are all quite expensive.

Pignoli have always been so, which has always slightly surprised me, considering they grow on pine trees.

I was looking at them in the supermarket while I was picking up the leeks. But the price made me turn aside.

If I had any land, I'd try to plant some nut trees on it.

That's the first time I've ever heard of the Indians and pine nut mouth!

I had this happen to me also after eating pine nuts from Trader Joe's. It's very unpleasant, and it did last about a week or so. My assumption was some unregulated pesticide or something. I don't buy pine nuts from Asia anymore.

I've heard of, but never experienced pine mouth. That's perhaps because I've never bought them in any of the supermarkets or discount warehouses (didn't even know they were available there until recently). I get mine from Middle Eastern and Greek grocery stores, where they are likely a bit more expensive, but the sources are generally Lebanon, Greece, Italy, or other places in the Mediterranean region. Like Rose, I generally eat mine in kibbee or other cooked foods but, occasionally, will eat them raw.

Many years,

Neil
