In today's 'Today in History': February 24, 1584 Pope Gregory promulgated the Gregorian Calendar. Are you or with it? Inter Gravissimas ( link ) was issued by Pope Gregory XIII, February 24, 1581/2. The Bull's stated date "anno Incarnationis dominicæ MDLXXXI" means the year 1582 beginning January 1. Since 10 days needed to be removed to align the calendar with the vernal equinox, however, the date of the Bull on the Proleptic Gregorian calendar is February 24, +10 days, 1582. The Gregorian Calendar has become a widely adopted standard and therefore a worldwide de facto source of unity; taking January 1, for instance: With most countries using the Gregorian calendar as their main calendar, New Year's Day is the closest thing to being the world's only truly global public holiday... link

Interesting. I didn't know that the year it was promulgated what 1584--no wonder the resistance from some groups...(being post-schism).
It was also post-Reformation; so predominently Protestant countries resisted on the grounds of "Popery". England and its (then) American colonies were the last holdouts, not adopting the Gregrorian calendar until 1752. By then the calendars were 11 days apart. Since rents were due on "time" even though the month had been shortened rioting brok out in some of the poorest cities of England with the peasantry demanding "give us back our eleven days." In Pennsylvania we still have some Old Order (Old Calendar) Amish; and some almanacks are published which list the "old style" dates.

It is what it is. Don't have nothin' directly to do with me or, as far as I can tell, with Jesus, either.
