'THE very first words that St. Rose of Viterbo learnt to say were the holy names Jesus, Mary, and the same of St. John the Baptist, whose picture was in the house. When she was only two years old, she used to go to the church of St. Francis; she would kneel down before Jesus in the blessed sacrament, and adore him. She listened to sermons and instructions, and said them by heart afterwards. When she was seven years old, she used to stop day and night praying in her little room, which was so small that it could hold only a bed and a little altar. She did not go out except to hear holy mass, at the next church, called Mary on the Hill.

WHEN Marina de Escobar was only three years old, people often heard her saying, "I love God more than my father and mother, and more than all things else." She used to hide herself in the house and in the fields. When they asked her why did she hide herself, she said, "I want to find God, who is my life." When she was a little girl, she said she did not know what was meant by meditation; but that she loved to think about what Jesus did for us. This was really meditation, so she used to make a, meditation - without knowing it.'

Fr. John Furniss, 'God Loves Little Children'

from the Divine Liturgy . . .

"Let us love one another that with one heart and one mind we may confess, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, the Trinity, One in Essence and Undivided."

With the word ‘fasting’ we mean abstinence from food, but also from all evil desires, so that the
Christian may communicate his prayers to God with peace and fervor, kill his evil desires and
acquire the Grace of God. The fast is a work of virtue for it bridles the desires of the flesh,
strengthens the will, assists in repentance, and thus is a menas of salvation.

Elder Cleopa of Romania, “On Fasting,” The Truth of Our Faith, Peter Alban Heers (ed, tr),
Uncut Mountain Press, Thessalonica, Greece, pp. 141-142.

'When the desiring aspect of the soul is frequently excited, it implants in the soul a habit of self-indulgence which is difficult to break. When the soul's incensive power is constantly stimulated, it becomes in the end cowardly and unmanly. The first of these failings is cured by long exercise in fasting, vigils and prayer; the second by kindness, compassion, love and mercy.'

St. Maximos the Confessor

"To repent is to look, not downward at my own shortcomings, but upward at God's love; not backward with self-reproach, but forward with trustfulness. It is to see, not what I have failed to be, but what by the grace of Christ I can yet become." Metropolitan Kallistos Ware

Forgiveness

Anyone can hold a grudge, but it takes a person with character to forgive. When you forgive, you release yourself from a painful burden. Forgiveness doesnt mean what happened was OK, and it doesnt meant that person should still be welcome in your life. It just means you have made peace with the pain, and are ready to let it go.

Two Quotes for the day from a modern day saint (not yet canonized but widely considered to be)

-- The greatest sickness of our age is the vain thoughts of secular people, which bring stress.

Only Christ can provide a cure with spiritual serenity, along with eternity, provided you repent and turn to Him.

Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain (+1996)

--So that Hell hear you during prayer, turn the dial to humility, for God always works in this frequency; then humbly ask for His mercy.

Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Psalm 91:1-2

This seems a cheerful world, Donatus, when I view it from this fair garden. But if I climbed some great mountain and looked out over the wide land, you know well what I would see. Brigands on the high roads, pirates on the seas, men murdered in the amphitheaters to please the applauding crowds, and under all roofs misery and selfishness. It is really a bad world. And yet in the midst of it, I have found a quiet and holy people. They have discovered a joy which is a thousand times better than any pleasure of this sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They have overcome the world. These people, Donatus, are the Christians, and I have become one of them.

Cyprian, a Christian martyr of the 3rd century

Remember that your faith is not an article of apparel which one wears only as long as it is useful, and then replaces it with another. Our faith is the greatest treasure, it alone can make us happy here and hereafter according to the promise of Christ. Be therefore, greatful to God for granting you this priceless gift by which alone you can save your immortal soul.

Blessed Bishop +Paul Gojdich - July 17, 1888 to July 17, 1960

'A lady wishing to have a widow live with her to take care of, asked St. Athanasius to find her one among his poor. Afterwards meeting the Bishop, she reproached him that he had treated her ill, because this person was too good, and gave her nothing to do by which she could gain heaven; and she begged him to give her another. The saint chose the worst he could find; of a cross, grumbling temper, never satisfied with what was done for her. This is the way we must act, for there is no great merit in doing good to one who values it, who thanks us and is grateful.

There are some persons who think they are never treated well enough; they seem as if they had a right to every thing. They are never pleased with what is done for them; they repay everybody with ingratitude. . . Well! those are the people to whom we should do good by preference.'

St. Jean Marie Baptiste Vianney, the Cure of Ars

This is one of the most quintessential and well loved Eastern quotes:

"Acquire a peaceful spirit, and around you thousands will be saved."--St. Seraphim of Sarov
