I would be glad to to that in another thread. What exactly do you want to know about the Collegium Russicum? I don't know much about it as my interest in the Eastern Churches has been a recent thing. However, I shall try to find out more about it.

Interesting tidbit, though you probaly already knew this, but a student of this college was Walter Ciszek, S.J. who wrote two books: With God in Russia and He Leadeth Me. I have read the second one, and plan on reading the first book when I come into contact with it. :grin: This book, He Leadeth Me deeply moved me.

yes, I know Father Ciszek was there along with Pietro Leoni who was an Italian priest of the Russian Catholic Church and survivor of the Gulag and more also Blessed Theodore Romzha Ruthenian Catholic Church's Bishop of Mukachevo, martyr under Joseph Stalin, I was blessed during my ony trip to Ukraine to pray at the spot he was martyred at.

Let me suggest that a relatively quick on-line read, that will provide a brief overview of the Eastern and Oriental Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox, is Father Ron Roberson's - The Eastern Churches: A Brief Survey. It can be found and read here (Click 'Introduction' in the box at the right and it will take you to the text).

There is also a very detailed thread here that outlines the 22 Eastern and Oriental Catholic Churches, but it probably is more detailed than you're ready for as yet. As Bob noted, there is also a lot of information on the main ByzCath site (outside the forum).

As for specific queries that you might have, I'd suggest posting them individually to the various appropriate fora. A few at a time is usually best, rather than a blitz all at once. That is especially true given that some members fast from posting during Great Lent or limit their time on-line. So, replies might be slower than otherwise.

You are welcome A.S., there are many good books out there, some are very basic and easy reads without getting into the heavy artillery to coin a phrase...

My humble suggestion is to review of the various Seminary Press bookstores and then places like Amazon and Barnes and Noble, they all tend to carry some of the same books and you can shop around for the best price by doing that (the online stores such as amazon offer free shipping depending upon your order, etc.)

The Face of God by Archbishop Joseph (Raya), of blessed memory, is an excellent work. I'd second the other suggestion made, that of The Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware).

As a follow-up to the booklet by Father Roberson to which I linked above, I'd suggest 2 books that are particularly well-suited to someone just beginning to study the East. The two are:

Eastern Catholics in the United States by Father Fred Saato and
101 Questions and Answers on Eastern Catholic Churches by Deacon Edward Faulk, a member of this forum

Although both Father Fred and Deacon Ed are Melkite Greek-Catholics (as was Archbishop Raya), both books address Eastern Catholicism in the broad context, rather than being focused on any specific Church.

Given that you're likely to order from overseas, avoid the seminary and eparchial bookstores, and Barnes and Noble - none of those are likely to be the best way for you to obtain books. You'll pay new book prices plus international shipping.

Instead, I'd look at Amazon.com, Alibris.com, or Abebooks.com - and check for good quality used copies - which can almost always be found at reasonable prices that will take some of the edge off the international shipping costs.

So sorry it's been a few days since my last response. I could not log into the forums for some reason.

I don't think I'll do a blitz. I'm just a little afraid of the Main forums <hee hee>. I am going to start to sift through the ByzCath page. I just have not had much time to sit down and go through it.

I'll write down the questions and post them one by one.

When is Great Lent over? I will post questions after that time. Uhhh I realize that there is an old and new calendar, so when is the first date that Great Lent concludes for both Churches.
