Fr James (Merva) a monk at Holy Trinity Monastery in Butler Pa, fell asleep in the Lord this evening. He had been ill for quite some time.
Memory Eternal! I am so sad to hear this. I spent Lent and Passion Week of 2008 with Fr. Abbot Leo and the monks of Holy Trinity, discerning if I had a call to the life. Fr. James was not well then and he took a turn for the worse after I left. Eternal memory, Fr. James. How many monks are left there now? Fr. Theodore passed a few years ago and that left four. Is Fr. Abbot Leo still well?

May the memory of the Lord's servant, Father James, be eternal!

N.B. Fr. James was a monk but not a priest.

Monk James J. Merva | Visit Guest Book
Monk James Merva Monk James J. Merva, 69, of the Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Monas-tery, Butler, died Saturday at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia. He was born Aug. 12, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a son of John and Dorothy Stueber Merva. Brother James professed his vows as a Benedictine Byzantine Catholic Monk at the Holy Trinity Monastery on July 4, 1965. He remained there working on the farm for more than 40 years until the farm was closed. He enjoyed the animals and all aspects of farming. He also had been in charge of maintenance at the monastery buildings and property. An outgoing and friendly man, he was devoted to his God, friends and the many visitors to the monastery. Brother James loved the simple monastic lifestyle of prayer and work. Unfortunately, his last four years were in declining health that caused a two-year residence at the Chicora Medical Center. He is survived by a sister, Margaret McAllister and her husband, Robert, of California; one niece; one nephew; four grandnieces and grandnephews; and his family of Benedictine Byzantine Catholic Monks at the Holy Trinity Monastery. MERVA - Friends of Monk James J. Merva, who died Saturday, March 10, 2012, will be received at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 105 Kohler Ave., Lyndora, from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. The Very Rev. Eugene P. Yackanich, Administrator of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, will be the main celebrant. Abbot Leo Schlosser and the Rev. Anselm Orlosky of Holy Trinity Monastery will concelebrate. Interment will be at Mount St. Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown. A Parastas service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations could be made to the Holy Trinity Monastery, P.O. Box 990, Butler, PA 16003, or to the Chicora Medical Center, 160 Medical Center Road, Chicora, PA 16025. Arrangements are entrusted to Geibel Funeral Home, Butler.
