Titular bishop of Gratianopolis and former (Emeritus) Apostolic Exarch of Greece (of the Byzantine Rite Catholics) Anargyros (Printezis) passed away yesterday, Sunday 18th March 2012, in Athens, Greece.

Bishop Anargyros, of blessed memory, was born in Vari village (Syros Island, Greece), on 16th August, 1937.

He was ordained priest in Rome (Church of S. Atanasio) on 10th December, 1961, by the titular Archbishop of Hierapolis in Syria and later Cardinal-priest of S. Atanasio Gabriel Acacius (Coussa), B.A.

He was ordained bishop in Athens (Church of the Holy Trinity) on 6th August, 1975, by Archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia Saba (Youakim), B.S., Titular Bishop of Lebedus Vasile (Cristea), A. A., and Titular Bishop of Cadi Archbishop Miroslav Stefan (Marusyn).

He was the main co-consecrator of bishop Sotir (Ferrara)
of Piana degli Albanesi (Sicily, Italy).

He retired on 23th April, 2008. The same day priest Dimitrios Salachas was appointed new Apostolic Exarch of Greece and titular bishop of Carcabia.

During his exarchate two new parishes were created, that of Saint Nicholas, for the Byzantine rite Ukrainian Catholics, and that of Our Lady of the Grace, for the Assyrian rite Chaldean Catholics living in Athens.

Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral (Athens, Greece), on Thursaday (15:00).

May his memory be eternal!

A story from almost 15 years ago, when Kyr Anárghyros brought our own Father Serge, of blessed memory, to Athens to serve Divine Liturgy on Pascha for the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic population there.

Ukrainian liturgy celebrated in Greece

Thanks for sharing this. I know that Fr. Serge, of blessed memory, was quite familiar with Athens and Greece,(spoke modern Greek) and visited there often for the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The last time he was there was in May or June 2008 for the anniversary of their church.
