The Byzantine-Slav Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Father Casimir Kucharek This unique book offers a detailed observaton of the structure and explanation of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Part One reviews the history of different liturgies then, Part Two intersects with rubrics, theology and similarities between east and west pertaining to various practices. It may sound like easy reading, however, the book is 836 pages long but becomes a facinating encounter for those who wish to seriously undertake a review the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The book can be purchased at the Byzantine Church Supplies store 810 N. Franklin St. Philadelphia, PA 19123, Phone (215)627-0660, just click on the "books" section of the website and scroll until you see this selection http://www.ukrcathedral.com/byzsup/index.htmlPS: All profits from sales at the store go toward supporting St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary in Washington DC.

I would like a concise book, ebook, etc regarding festal celebrations. I am holding to the tradition that the Annunciation even suppresses Good Friday and need some reference to support same. Please email me at bishopleland@ec.rr.com with the information.

While hunting for a thread on an unrelated topic yesterday, I ran across a thread from several years ago in which this was the major issue being discussed. Unfortunately, trying to find it again just now, I was unable to do so. If I come across it, I'll post the link. Many years, Neil

I still have the lamentable liturgy booklet from that day (I think it was 2006 or 2007).
Indeed, the celebration of the Annunication has liturgical precedence over Great Friday, and the celebration of both on the same day leads to a great deal of spiritual schizophrenia as one moves between the joyful announcement of the coming of the Messiah, and his death upon the Cross. The Typicon should include instructions about what to take in what order during each of the services of the day.

Good Friday is never surpressed but if Annunciation falls on it a Vesperal Liturgy is celebrated combining the texts. http://www.patronagechurch.com/Typicon/MAR/25_march.htm

Bishop Leland, the Festal Menaion of Archbishop Kallistos Ware has good instructions and explanations regarding the coincidence of the Annunciation with various days of Holy Week and Pascha. For those of us on the Julian Calendar it seems to happen less frequently.

For those of us on the Julian Calendar it seems to happen less frequently. I don't know about the frequency issue - the 25th of March or the 7th of April seem to fall infrequently in connection with Pascha either way. I do recall both Annunciation on Good Friday and Annunciation on Pascha during my lifetime and I agree with Stuart that there is a great deal of 'spiritual schizophrenia' when that takes place! Our Chancery sent out detailed Rubrics on the occasions that has taken place. Of course, some priests still 'free-lance' things even when given written 'orders' adding to the confusion.

Using the Revised Julian calendar with the Orthodox Paschalion, Annunciation and Pascha cannot coincide. It can occur with Julian calendar/Orthodox Paschalion and Gregorian calendar/Gregorian Paschalion.
