We know of many Eastern Catholics who were murdered in the Soviet Union ostensibly by Orthodox. It's difficult to discern whether these Orthodox murderers were actually atheist KGB agents or not but they were called Orthodox. Are there any official or semi official records showing how many Eastern Catholics were butchered during the Soviet rein of terror?

Just who are these Greek Catholics murdered by Orthodox Christians during the Soviet era? Just who are these Orthodox Christians doing the killing? Names and addresses would be appreciated, otherwise I'm just going to dismiss this as just so much polemical writing.

Usually murderers don't keep records of their victims. Its so much easier for the victims to just disappear. Think of Nazi Germany or Argentina.

Keep in mind that many were murdered/martyred on both sides of the fence, both Catholic and Orthodox. Why point fingers in our present age? If we start to do that, we may never stop. We may never forgive, heal and move on. While the "state church" was complicit in the forced union of Greek Catholics, and there is more than ample evidence that it abdicated it's moral position in Soviet times as a survival mechanism, it was the state authority that shot people in their doorways or sent them off to Siberia for a slower and colder death.

There are books and records of some of this. I'm a historian by inclination. I'm interested in finding the answer to my question. I'll ask my priest. Heck, we even have a few feast days for some of these martyrs.

Dan,

I'm a historian by inclination also and the history of Eastern Catholicism and Orthodoxy in Russia is one of my particular interests. That said, I have absolutely no idea as to what the hell you are going on about.

If you want to know about Catholics martyred under the Communist regimes in Russia and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, I suggest that you consult the 9 pages of listings of Martyrs Killed in odium fidei under Communist Regimes at The Hagiography Circle.

If you want to know about Orthodox martyred under the Communist regimes in Russia and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, I suggest you consult the listings of New Martyrs, Confessors, and Passion-Bearers of Russia at All Saints of North America Russian Orthodox Church.

Neither list is at all complete. The second relates only those of Russia proper, I believe, and you'd have to search for additional lists of those from the many countries under the Communist yoke.

Feel free to post again - in a new thread - on the topic of those martyred by the Communists - of either or both Churches, but do it when you're feeling significantly less polemical on the topic.

Holy New Martyrs of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, pray for us!

Many years,

Neil
