Three National Geographic producers are coming to Homer [Alaska] on Tuesday to begin casting for a new television series on the Russian Old Believer communities.

One more step in the discussion on National Geographic’s casting call for Alaska’s Old Believers. Will National Geographic’s upcoming series about Alaska’s “Old Believers” be a depressing repeat of “Meet The Hutterites”… but with polar bears?

More words of caution for Alaskan Old Believers to consider.

If problems arise during the production of the Old Believers “docu-series,” will Mr. Lyle [CEO of the National Geographic Channel] be there to [offer] support to the community?

Most of all: Would the global reputation of the Old Believers be safe in Mr. Lyle’s hands?

National Geographic gets "cold" reception from Alaskan Old Believers

When a pair of directors from the National Geographic reality-series visited the Old Believer village of Nikolaevsk Tuesday evening, only about a dozen people attended. Word had gone out that even though it is the National Geographic Channel, the producers’ aim may be to sensationalize Old Believer lives as had been done with another religious group, the Hutterites of Montana.

Some members of the National Geographic Society question what the producers of the proposed National Geographic Channel program on the Old Believers are doing.
