I went to a Ruthenian Catholic Church yesterday (12-Oct-2014). The readings were Hebrews 13:7 and Luke 7:11-16. However every "Byzantine Daily Readings" source I can find says the readings for this day were Titus 3 and Luke 8. What am I missing?

Just a guess, but in the Orthodox World the Slavic and Greek/Byzantine lectionaries differ. Perhaps that is the explanation as I would assume those of the Ruthenian/Ukrainian Greek Catholics and the Melkites differ in the same manner.

Light,

That's interesting.

Titus does not show up until the 28th Week After Pentecost, and then only parts of the first chapter are read. Parts of the second chapter are read at Theophany (January 6th). So if you heard Titus 3 it was probably chosen on purpose.

The discrepancy in the Gospel reading is easier to explain. Some parishes follow the "Lucan Jump". Beginning on the Monday following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (14 September) the Gospel of Luke is read. See note 2 at the end of the lectionary page for a bit more information.

According to my Byzantine Catholic Calendar the readings for October 12 are:

2 Cor 9:6-11; Lk 7::11-16 or Heb13:7-16; Jn 17:1-13

Looks like a little bit of mix and match at that parish. If you want a copy of the calendar PM me and I will see if we have an extra copy still around or I can mail you a new one in a month or so.

The churches that had Titus 3:8-15 and Luke 8:5-15 on 12 October 2014 follow the Greek tradition (Greeks, Antiochians/Melkites, Bulgarians) and celebrated the 4th Sunday of Luke, because they always commemorate the Fathers of the 7th Ecumenical Council on the 4th Sunday of Luke and do this only between 11 and 18 October, even if it is before the 3rd Sunday. So they will celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Luke on the next Sunday (19 October 2014) and will read Luke 7:11-16.

Those churches (Ruthenian, OCA) that had Luke 7:11-16 celebrated the 3rd Sunday of Luke. Their next Sunday (19 October 2014) will be the 4th Sunday of Luke - Luke 8:5-15.

A similar shift goes for the 5th and 6th Sundays of Luke. The 5th Sunday of Luke is always only between 30 October and 5 November in the Greek tradition, so those churches that follow the Greek lectionary (Greeks, Antiochians/Melkites, Bulgarians) will have the 6th Sunday of Luke (Luke 8:26-39) on 26 October and the 5th Sunday of Luke ( Luke 16:19-31) on 2 November. For this reason the 5th Sunday of Luke is sometimes even after the 7th Sunday as it was in 2012 and 2013. Those churches that do not follow that tradition, do not make this shift.

That's what I thought. Years ago someone purchased a beautiful gold cased English gospel in Athens and presented it to our church. It was the "wrong" arrangement as we (ACROD) follow the Ruthenian/Ukrainian/Russian(OCA)arrangement.
