A hammer and sickle shaped crucifix. I can't even imagine how St. John Paul II would have reacted!

Popes do get strange gifts . . .

Perhaps it can be interpreted in the sense of how atheistic communism crucified Christ anew in how it persecuted His Body the Church . . .

And Pope St John Paul got his share of strange gifts - much stranger than even this, including all manner of pagan and communist items.

However, Fr. Lombardi appears to be bending over backwards to try and "spin" the Pope's initial reaction to such a thing.

Fr. Espinal himself continues to be a controversial figure in Bolivia and elsewhere.

But I think the Pope's facial reaction says it all.
