Single local Orthodox Church will promote the unity of the country – President at the meeting with representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch

President Petro Poroshenko met with representatives of Archbishop of Constantinople–New Rome, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who came to Ukraine to participate in the celebration of the Day of Christianization of Kievan Rus’ – Ukraine and commemoration of the 1000th anniversary of the repose of Grand Prince of Kyiv Volodymyr the Great.

The President welcomed leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of USA and Canada Metropolitan Yurij (Kalistchuk), Metropolitan Antony (Scharba), Bishop Daniel (Zelinsky) and UOC representative Danyl (Bilak) in Ukraine.

“The Prayer of Ecumenical Patriarch and his unshakable position in defense of peace and unity of Ukraine helps us heal the wounds caused by Russian aggression and terrorism,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State noted that Ukraine is going through difficult and crucial times. Each day is an example of great service to the Motherland by the Ukrainian militaries in Donbas and the entire Ukrainian nation, which is doing everything possible to unite and overcome challenges, as stated by Petro Poroshenko. “Ukrainian people pray for the unity to be achieved in church life. All Ukrainians strive for the creation of local Ukrainian church. It is a dream that will help Ukraine become united and preserve principles and traditions,” the President emphasized.

In their turn, representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch noted that it is a great honor for them to take part in today’s events. “The Patriarch asked two Metropolitans from Canada and USA to come to Ukraine and celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the repose of Grand Prince of Kyiv Volodymyr the Great with the people of Ukraine,” Metropolitan Yurij said. He noted that war in Donbas facilitated the unity of the Ukrainian nation. The representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch are hopeful that the dialogue on the unification of the Ukrainian Orthodox Churches will be continued.

Interesting how people are always talking about "If there were a single Ukrainian Orthodox Church ..." and never "If there were a single Ukrainian Catholic Church ..."

Oh wait, I guess that's because there already is one. :BigSmile smilie not found:

Actually, Peter, there is more than one, although only one canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine itself.

As the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan (MP) Vladyka Alexander (Drabynko) said in a recent interview, the reason Ukrainians are moving from the MP to the uncaonical KP is "because they don't believe the UOC-MP is a Ukrainian Orthodox Church."

It is clear that the EP continues to be involved, much to the chagrin of the UOC-MP (who recently called on the EP to explain itself in terms of sending these same two UOC-EP hierarchs to be observers at meetings between the KP and the UAOC - we can assume no explanation has, as yet, been given . . .).

The situation with the UOC-MP and its Ukrainian adherents appears to be deteriorating with each passing month. And the Patriarch of Moscow appears to want to throw gasoline on an already volatile situation. Two days ago, the MP lamented about those "poor nationalistic Ukrainians."

He also attacked the EC Church, once again, saying that the Union of Brest was nothing but an attack by a foreign power (i.e. the pope) on the Orthodox Church in Ruthenia.

What is conveniently absent from this (both typical and tiresome tirade, oft- repeated by Metropolitan Hilarion at every turn) is that the Ruthenian Metropolia in the time period mentioned was not a part of the Moscow Patriarchate at all and did not see itself as a vassal of, in the words of a number of the Orthodox saints and teachers of the Ruthenian Metropolia, "barbaric Muscovy."

From a completely biased, pro-Ukrainian Orthodox autocephalous point of view, it is very good that the EP continues to be involved with the many, many Ukrainian Orthodox who want BOTH a canonical Church (in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch rather than the MP) AND a Church that reflects their Ukrainian self-identity and values.

Despite the UAOC's rejection of unity with the KP, that has not been able to stall this entire process - that of the establishment of a canonical UOC with its ecclesial centre in Kyiv with the full backing of the Ecumenical Patriarch.

This kind of enduring situation makes the pro-Moscow UOC-MP hierarchs sleep like babies at night - getting up every two hours to cry.

Alex
