Today Pope Francis inaugurated the "Year of Mercy" with the opening of the doors etc.

He asked our UGCC Primate, Patriarch Svyatoslav, to bring the miraculous icon "the Doors of Mercy" to Rome for the occasion. It was enshrined beside the Papal Altar throughout the Mass and ceremonies.

The icon was crowned as miraculous by Pope St John Paul II in 1996. One reason for Pope Francis' attachment to this particular icon is that a copy of it was enshrined in Buenos Aires at the seminary there where he himself developed a personal love of it.

And owing to its title, it is an entirely appropriate icon for the Year of Mercy!

Most Holy and All-Immaculate Mother of God, Door of Mercy, open to us the Mercy of Your Divine Son!

Alex

Mmmmmmm slightly different from what I was told Alex;)

I'm not on FB but this was sent to me posted by the Ukrainian Embassy to the Vatican

Face Book page

OK even with google I could not get much of the article but the photos are good and very clear.

Later I got a link to a translation

Quote
Translation courtesy of Fr. Athanasius McVay : Pope Francis asked for the ancient Ukrainian icon "Doors of Mercy" to be brought to the Vatican for the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
This icon, which combines both Western and Eastern traditions, is particularly symbolic and encourages all Christians to unity and peace for the sake of charity.
The Icon was met at the airport by: the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Holy See, Tatyana Izhevska, and Ambassador of Poland to the Holy See, Piotr Konopka Novina, and representatives of the Vatican City.
The image of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, which dates from the seventeenth century, comes from the cathedral of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the Polish city of Jaroslaw. The icon, which takes its name from the Byzantine Lenten liturgical text, "Open the Doors of Mercy to me, O Mother of God." is considered miraculous and was given a crown by St. John Paul II in 1996.
A copy of of the icon is also found in the Argentinian church where Pope Francis' spiritual director, the late Salesian Bishop Stefan Chmil. The icon miraculously survived a fire in the church.
It was escorted to Rome by Greek-Catholic priests: Bogdan Kruba (Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky Cathedral Parish, Warsaw) and Krzysztof Blazheyevsky (Parish of the Transfiguration, Jaroslaw) and officials of the Przemysl-Warsaw Archeparchy Arkadii Giza and Darius Borovichi.

The Icon was seen very very clearly at the televised Mass today

This morning

Yes, sorry! There are other copies of the icon, of course. I understand Poland owns another Ukrainian icon . . . Our Lady of Czestochowa . . . smile But that's OK!

Our parish of St Nicholas here in Toronto has placed a copy of this icon on the tetrapod which is there every Sunday when festal icons are not used.
