Gaelic Psalm Singing or Line Singing is a rather unique form of congregational singing:

For more background and its influence in American: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lining_out

Apparently, some of the early "Reformers" felt that accapella was the more appropriate form of singing (Hmmm). I can hear this style in the melody lines of "Amazing Grace" and "Abide with Me."

On a lighter note, it looks like the custodian failed to fire up the furnace. Austere to say the least.

Metered Psalm settings were first introduced in the West by the followers of Ulrich Zwingli. The "radical reformers" believed that only the words of scripture should be used in worship, so metered Psalms replaced hymns.

The "Geneva Psalter" was one of the early creations. Many of the Psalm settings were eventually translated into English. Some Bibles published as recently as the 1890's included a complete metered Psalm appendix. Ironically, one such Bible in my collection also inlcudes the Apocrypha.

BTW "lining out" is Protestantized canonarching.
