Observance by Byzantine Catholics offers Susquehanna River blessingin an Old World benediction. By STEVE MOCARSKY smocarsky@leader.net Posted on Mon, Jan. 10, 2005 Excerpt: WILKES-BARRE - About 100 Byzantine Catholics representing four local churches formed a procession to the apex of Veterans Memorial Bridge on Sunday to carry on a tradition widely observed by fellow Byzantine Catholics in Eastern Europe.
Dubbed "The Great Blessing of the Waters of the Susquehanna River," the service was carried out in observance of the Theophany, otherwise known as the baptism of Christ by St. John the Baptist.
The feast of Theophany is observed on Jan. 6, but the service was moved to Sunday for practical reasons, said the Rev. Theodore Krepp of St. Mary's Protection Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston. Click here to read entire article.
