Shlomo Lkhoolkhoon,

I thought that the Ukrainian Catholics would find this article interesting, since even though Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi helped save "hundreds of Jews, mainly children who were hidden in church institutions." Israel is not willing to recognize that because he was a Ukrainian nationalist.

Poosh BaShlomo Lkhoolkhoon,

Dear Yuhannon,

Actually, he was hardly the nationalist, but was very sympathetic to Ukrainians, both Catholics and Orthodox.

He was raised a Pole and brought with him the strong Polish dedication to the nation.

My great-grandmother was 100% Polish but when she became a Presbytera, she became 100% Ukrainian - her strong cultural pride is what she took from her Polish heritage.

St Andrew was very much like that.

In fact, there is more animosity towards him coming from his Polish countrymen than anyone else (I understand there are two books published in Poland that disparage him bitterly and that the Polish episcopate, or members thereof, have opposed his beatification).

St Andrew dressed numerous Jews in seminarians' cassocks in L'viv.

The SS asked him why there were so many seminarians . . .

He said, "We had an excellent harvest this year!"

My great grandfather was the groundskeeper of St Andrew's summer residence in the Carpathians and my grandfather had all his seminary expenses paid for by Met. Andrew (as did MANY others).

My father was in the seminary when Met. Andrew called him in for an audience.

He looked at my dad intently and said, "You would make a good priest, but I see by your eyes that you want to marry and raise a family in the world."

A true Saint and most charitable! As I am "Alexander Roman" so he was "Roman Alexander" before he became "Andrew."
