I am very sad and embarrassed to say, that although I was born a Byzantine, I never learned very much about the traditions. My parents brought me to church every Sunday, but sent me to a Roman Catholic school. Therefore, I know the songs and prayers for the divine litergy very well, but I cannot explain the meaning or significance behind anything. My in-laws are Roman Catholic, and ask me many questions about the Byzantine Rite, but I can answer VERY few.

I want, so much, to understand the Byzantine Rite. I even went on the pilgrimage to the Ukraine for the 300yr anniversary 2 or 3 years ago. I had hoped to understand a little better, but I still feel in the dark.

I thought about talking to our pastor about this, but I am very embarrassed that after going to the same church for 29yrs, I know very little about it. My grandparents, on both sides of the family, were one of the founders of our church. They would be so disappointed in me if the were still with us!

If anyone can suggest where I can get some simple to read/understand information starting with the basics, I would greatly appreciate the info. I am also interested in the terminology of the different furnishings(for lack of a better term) in the church, along with their significance.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Dear Donna,

It is wonderful that you are discovering your roots. There are two basic books that may help explain the Faith. 1) The Mystery Beleived and 2) The Mystery Celebrated. Both are available from Byzantines.Net. I pray that discovering your roots, you grow closer to God.

God is among us,

Joseph

Donna,

Welcome! It is so great to come across a Byzantine who is seeking to learn more about her Church. The books Joseph has recommended are good but are not an easy read (you can order them from Theological Book Services at 1-800-558-0580).

A great book to start with is Timothy Ware's *The Orthodox Church* (Penguin Press). It outlines the historical development of the Church with a special emphasis on the Byzantine Church. The book consists of two major sections: History and Faith & Worship. While the historical section does not really discuss the historical events in the Byzantine Catholic Churches after we re-entered into full communion with Rome in 1596 (Ukrainians), 1646 (Ruthenians) and 1720 (Melkites), it does provide a good historical foundation to build on. The section on Faith & Worship presents an excellent overview of Byzantine theology (Byzantine Catholic theology is identical to Byzantine Orthodox theology). The Book is an easy read and I think you'll enjoy it.

Might I humbly suggest that, for now, you limit your reading to the above? It provide a good foundation to build on without the possibility of overload.

Let us know how it goes!

Joseph and Moose,

Thank you both so much for your quick responce. I just called a local book store and ordered "The Orthodox Church". It should be in in about 1 week. I'll let you know how I make out.

Thank you again!
