Dear Friends,

Ilya Romanovich mentioned this and I thought it worth a thread.

The Orthodox Church of Finland has introduced a number of new things, some of which have been picked up by at least one UC parish I know in Toronto.

It has introduced the Kiss of Peace in the Liturgy, processions during the Liturgy right around the Church etc.

What say ye?

Alex

Dear Alex, what exactly do you mean by procession? Processions proper, or entrances?

Alex,

My Melkite parish has retained the kiss of peace which was found in the earliest liturgies (long before the Latins brought it back). Is there something wrong with this practice?

Bless me a sinner, Father Deacon,

I like it!

It's just that most of the parishes I know don't do it.

They're probably against group hugs too . . .

Bless me a sinner, Father Mark!

The Great Entrance is done right around the body of the Church.

Christ is risen!

(BTW, how long are we to exchange this greeting, until Pentacoste, or just during Bright week??)

When I've been to Finland, I've never seen a "kiss of peace" nor anything unusual during the Little and Great entrances.

The only "deviations" I saw from standard Russian practice were chairs in the churches (but not pews, there were plenty of room to stand if one desired), maybe a slight majority of the women praying with uncovered heads, and some clean-shaven priests. And the Vigil service must have had some abbreviations, it only lasted for an hour and a half!

And then it is the calendar issue... frown

As far as I know (not that far), the clergy have always continued to exchange the kiss of peace.

And as far as I know, no one is preventing the Faithful from exchanging the kiss of peace amongst themselves.

In the Orthodox Tradition, AFAIK, the Kiss of Peace is exchanged within the various "ranks", i.e. presbyters, deacons, laity (each amongst themselves), n'est-ce pas?

The Antiochian Orthodox in my experience, also perform the Great Entrance around the Body of the Church.

It is a legitimate tradition of the Church of Antioch to make the Entrances around the Church.

Churches who follow the Greek tradition usually make the Great Entrance around the Church.
(Serbs sometimes do this as well).

I agree that the procession around the body of the church is a legitimate Antiochian tradition, but in the Greek churches I've been to it is not done ... rather there is the same "mini-procession" that one sees in most of the Balkan Orthodox and East Slav Orthodox usages.

I like what they did, about the Calendar, adopting the full gregorian Calendar, it's more logical than the reformed Julian calendar, and the monks cannot complain about the Apostles fasting . biggrin

One should question the "Why?" of the Finnish Orthodox Church's adoption of the Papal Calendar. The reason this was done was for the Orthodox Church of Finland to become Finland's second "State Church" (after the State's Finnish Lutheran Church), with all the benefits from taxes coming therefrom. The "cost" was that the Finnish Orthodox Church was forced to sell out totally on the Orthodox calendar, whether Julian or Revised Julian.
