I am looking for information regarding the whereabouts of the icon of Our Lady of Mukachevo. It was painted in Constantinople in 1453 and was donated by Pope Pius XI to the Eparchy of Mukachevo in 1926. It was enshrined in the Basilian Monastery of Saint Nicholas in Mukachevo. When the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) took control of the monastery, the icon was taken to Moscow and a copy of Our Lady of Vladimir was sent in its place.

1) Does anyone know where the icon is currently kept?
2) Has the Vatican or the Eparchy of Mukachevo ever asked for its return?
3)I have never seen an image of this icon. Are there any copies of this icon in existence?

In light of the return of the icon of Our Lady of Kazan to the ROC, it is about time that the ROC return to the Ruthenian Catholic Church this beloved icon of Our Lady of Mukachevo.

Here's a page about the icon, with a photo, on the Eparchy of Mukachevo website:

Thank you so much for the page!!!

Finally, I know how the icon looks like!

Unfortunately, I cannot read what it says about the icon.

Is there a kind soul who could translate it for me?

Here's another, different article (again in Ukrainian):

http://www.promin-lubovi.narod.ru/public/4/pub4st6.htm

Apparently, the icon is also known as "Protectress of Transcarpathia"!

There's a b&w representation of the icon on page 5 of this newsletter:

Alex,

Since I am not able to send you a private message...

Could you please read the following articles on Our Lady of Mukachevo?

http://www.mgce.uz.ua/ikona.htm

http://www.promin-lubovi.narod.ru/public/4/pub4st6.htm

Page 5 of this newsletter:

http://www.katedra.org.ua/visnyk/pdf/2004/ss18_2004.pdf

Are they articles that discuss the history of the icon?
I am wondering if the articles have answers to the following questions:

1) What happened to the icon after the transfer of the monastery to the ROC?
2) Does anyone know where the icon is currently kept?
3) Has the Vatican or the Eparchy of Mukachevo ever requested its return?

I will be sooooooo grateful to you!

God bless you!

Dear Griego,

When it comes to the icons of the Most Holy Mother of God, I cannot resist . . .

One of the articles states that the original Icon given to the Basilian Fathers by Pope Pius XI was kept with the father of one of the monks. The monk and his father died and and the secret of the icon went with them.

On January 4, 1999, there was an earthquake in Transcarpathia. The Basilian Fathers of "Male Berezne" went to Mukachevo to find the miraculous icon.

Eventually the family that kept the icon was found and the Fathers brought it to their monastery in Male Berezne.

The article ends with "May "Glory be to Jesus Christ" echo as a blessing for Transcarpathia always!"

Most Holy Mother of God, save us!

Wow! That is news to me!
I am just awestruck at the moment!

So then the icon was never taken to Moscow in the first place? I wonder if Fr. Christopher Zugger is aware of this since in his book "The Forgotten" he writes of the icon being taken to Moscow.

I am surprised that the news of its discovery was not better promulgated. I am happy to hear that the icon is back.

Thank you soooooooo much, Alex. You have made my day!

Who is this Fr. Christopher Zugger? What is the information for his book: self-published?

If there is a publisher, maybe you should write to him in care of the publisher with the correct information, and in the spirit of friendly Catholic-Orthodox relations.

Fr. Christopher Zugger is pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He has written a wonderful book titled, The Forgotten: Catholics of the Soviet Union Empire from Lenin through Stalin . This is the first book in English to recount in great detail the persecution of the Eastern and Roman Catholic churches in Russia. It is available through the parish website or Amazon.com.

The book was published in 2001; Fr. Christopher cites another book which states that the Mukachevo icon was taken to Moscow. So, it's very likely that Fr. Christopher was unaware of the icon's discovery in 1999 at the time of writing.

I see that means that there are two books out there with misinformation in them.

If you are know of the author and his parish, I suggest you provide him with the proper informatiion so he can correct his book.

Millar,

Would you be able to translate the following on-line articles about Our Lady of Mukchevo or at least give a summary of them?

http://www.mgce.uz.ua/ikona.htm

http://www.promin-lubovi.narod.ru/public/4/pub4st6.htm

I am interested in knowing details about the icon's rediscovery.

I would greatly appreciate it.

God bless you,

griego

The updated website for the Eparchy of Mukachevo has a new link on the icon of Our Lady of Mukachevo. You can click on the icon for an enlarged version of it.

The link is: http://www.mgce.uz.ua/ukr/ikona.php

Would anyone be so kind to give a summary in English on what the article says. Does it talk about the recovery of the icon?

I would really appreciate it.

God bless.
