Does anyone have the Ruthenian version of the Liturgy of St Basil in e-text? Ascii text would be best. I need it right away to give a sign language interpreter for a Liturgy on January 1st so that she can prepare.

Many thanks!

Dave,

I have the version that's found in Byzantine Daily Prayer on the ECPA of Southern California web site. Click the "Worship" link on the left side, then select "Liturgy of St. Basil." There are a few differences between what's here and what the Ruthenians actually use, but perhaps your priest could cross off those sections not actually used.

Edward, deacon and sinner.

David, I think it is most wonderful that you have given thought and energy to provide a sign interpreter for a liturgy.

I'm just stunned and amazed that someone would have the foresight and kindness to arrange this for non-hearing visitors.

You have my utmost respect for your kindness and thoughtfulness. May the Lord grant you His choicest blessings.

Blessings!

Thank you for the kind words, Dr John. The deaf coming to this Liturgy are my Mom and Dad (and maybe a couple of their friends) who will also attend our Crowning afterwards. I contacted the Roman Diocese in Phoenix, AZ and even though this is happening on a holiday (January 1st) they've promised us an interpreter for my folks. This will be their first time in a Catholic or Orthodox church. My wife and I have been married for 25 years but never in the Church. She was baptized this past Easter.

BTW, if anyone from the Forum is in the Phoenix AZ area on January 1st feel free to join us for our Crowning and reception which will be after the 10AM Liturgy at St Thomas Byzantine Catholic parish in Gilbert, AZ (our old home parish).

In Christ,

For those interested in how it all went...

I had sent the text of the Crowning itself to the interpreter and then pointed out in email the URL of the text of the Liturgy which was to proceed it. (I didn't want to scare her off and only asked for interpretation of the Crowning Service and let her decide if she wanted to do the Liturgy as well.)

She showed up prepared to do the Crowning and said she'd try to do the Liturgy also. I asked if she'd had a chance to look up the website with the text. She said no and asked: "Would it be pretty much like what I'd find in a Roman parish?" (This is 2 minutes before the start of Liturgy.) I said: "No." Amazingly, she took the challenge and interpreted the entire Liturgy (I had suggested she consider just doing a simplification of it for my parents) in beautiful ASL!

What was even more amazing is that she refused all payment for her services. She is the director of the Office of Ministry for the Handicapped for the Roman Diocese of Phoenix (she travelled 45 miles to our parish on a holiday) and gave me her card and said if I insisted on payment I could mail a donation payable to the Office not to her. She interpreted for about an hour and forty-five minutes both the Liturgy and a complete Crowning Service! She remarked how beautiful the Liturgy and Crowning were (she'd neve been to the Byzantine Church before).

The Crowning itself was a memorable occasion!

Oh my goodness!

Dave, I was there at the crowning (St. Thomas in Gilbert is my home parish, and where I was brought into the BCC)! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you and introduce myself to you. frown Darn. The sign language interpreter did a good job, I think. Were you holding the crown for one of your parents? I was seated one or two rows behind your parents.

Yours in the Theotokos,

Darrenn

Actually, I was the groom wink

Even though we're now in Southern Oregon and in a remarkable Roman parish St Thomas will always be our "home parish." We were so happy we could have our wedding there with Fr Phil doing the Crowning. I wish I could have met you also. St Thomas has sure grown since we were members ('92 to '98).
