My husband and I are currently going through a fertility evaluation after 5 years of trying to concieve. (We are in our early 30's)

I expect the doctor to give us options on the medical technologies available. We already have made some 'ethical and moral' limitations and are concidering adoption as a back up plan.

Could I have an overview of what is 'acceptable' medical aid regarding this issue?

Hi Weegee,

Here is a site that may help.

I do not know a great deal about the Catholic position on your problem except that the act of procreation must be unitive also; however, from past experience I have learned that it would be good for you to be in contact with Catholic specialists in this area, even if you are going to other doctors, ie, because of distance. If the doctors are not committed and educated Catholics, they'll tell you anything, not out of malice, just from ignorance. For example, my ob/gyn suggested birth control to me and I said, no, I'm Catholic, and he was Clueless! He kept trying to talk me into it! But he just didn't know.

I assume the rules are the same for Eastern Rite as for Western so you may want to check out the experts forum on NFP at EWTN: www.ewtn.com/ewtn/experts/question.asp (check out the FAQs first).

God bless you both on your journey!
