Do many other Ukrainian/Ruthenian parishes have a similar schedule? and similar latinizations in their Holy Week schedule?

Here is Holy Week at my home parish in California (all wording taken from the bulliten):

Holy Monday: 5:30pm - Presanctified DL
7:00pm - Stations of the Cross

Holy Tuesday: 8:00am - Divine Liturgy
7:00pm - Stations of the Cross

Holy Wenesday: 5:30pm - Presanctified DL
7:00pm - Stations of the Cross

Holy Thursday: 9:00am - Vespers with DL of St. Basil
7:00pm - Matins of the 12 Passion Gospels

Good Friday: 12:00pm - Vespers of the Passion and Procession of the Shroud
1:00-3:00pm - Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Holy Saturday: 9:00am - Jerusalem Matins
5:00pm - Vespers

Easter Sunday: 8:00am - Ressurection Matins
9:00am - Divine Liturgy

So sad. Please pray for my parish and pastor.

From my understanding the Stations of the Cross are an extra-liturgical devotion, which is not neccesarily a relection of the Latin church. But even if it is, if the faithful derive spiritual fruit from the rosary, the stations, etc, why should they be denied that? Popular devotion is outside the realm of the magsterium (my objection to HH JPII adding mysteries to the Rosary without the people's asking), unlike the Divine Liturgy which should come from the Magisterium rather than the people. We can speak of latinaisations there, but I'm not so sure it's appropriate with the Stations. Is that what you were referring to, or is there something else I've missed?

I will pray,

N

Ned,

Part of what you say is correct, paraliturgical services are just that. They are extra and if the people want to do them you can't really stop them.

On the otherhand these devotions should not displace what is supposed to be there. Mon-Wed of Holy Week should be Bridegroom Matins in the Morning, Presanctifed Liturgy in the Evening. To displace these Liturgies with paraliturgical devotion, a Latin one at that, is not right and goes against every mandate we have received from the Holy Father.

Well, it's not quite true to say that you cannot stop people. If there are no "stations of the Cross" in the building, this will at least inhibit the attempt to practice such a thing, especially in an organized and audible fashion. Having some sort of public "adoration of the Blessed Sacrament" definitely requires the priest, or at the very least the deacon - and, as pointed out, this is being allowed to displace the prescribed services during Holy Week.

If someone wants to bring a rosary to church and recite it quietly, there isn't much anyone can do to prevent it. But when some group organizes a public quasi-service of the rosary, that can certainly be stopped - gently, please; there's no need to be offensive.

Could someone please explain to me what aspect of the Stations of the Cross seems to bother so many Eastern Christians? Is it something about the devotion itself, or is it just the physical presence of the Stations in a church when you would prefer icons, or something else more Eastern, instead? Just curious.

Well, we in Lublin never had Via Crucis or Benediction service. BTW, there is also something in the schedule which has not attracted your attention: "regular" Divine Liturgy on Holy Tuesday? WHY?

I think what Father Deacon lance has posted here says it all: "these devotions should not displace what is supposed to be there. Amen.

Anyone who wants to participate in those devotions can (and should) go where those devotions belong.

Well, could be, but then why Presanctified on Monday and Wednesday? Are the pastor in question unable (???) to consecrate three Lambs on Sunday, so he consecrates one for Monday, and then on Tuesday - for Wednesday? OR WHAT? confused confused confused

The pastor in question just does what he feels is best. He makes all the liturgical decisions.

Next week for St. Thomas Sunday, there will be Adoration and Benediction, followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet. but how do you do Adoration? How can you fit the Lamb in a Monstance? Our bread is leavened! It makes no sense to me at all!

Oh, he has also made his own translation of the Creed.

Has anyone tried to shake his convictions with some normative stuff (like the 1996 Instruction for instance) in hand?

I have witnessed "Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament" in the East. We call it the "Moleben to Jesus, Lover of Mankind". The priest just takes the ceborium, covered with a veil out of the tabernacle, and sets it on the altar. No monstrance.

Fr. Deacon Peter,

It's impossible.

This priest has publically said numerous times he thinks he will defrocked before he dies. But that is a whole different story

How to get the Lamb into the monstrance? Heavens, no problem at all. There are (or were) manufacturers who cater to such dubious needs. They make a small contraption which will hold a well-dried Lamb for insertion into the Monstrance.

But I'd better stop right there; this is stimulating disedifying memories.
