Fr Bohdan Danylo new Bishop of St. Josaphat in Parma - 08/07/14 10:40 AM

Fr Bohdan Danylo has today been announced as the next Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio.

The Bishop-elect was born in Giżycko in the province of Suwałki (currently in the Archeparchy of Przemyśl-Warszawa) in Poland on 27 May 1971. He studied philosophy in Lublin and theology at the Catholic University of America, and was ordained a priest of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Stamford, Conn., on 1 October 1996. He attended St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, N.Y., and received a licenciate degree in theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome in 2005. He is currently Rector of St. Basil's Seminary in Stamford, Conn.

Many years!

Hmmmmm . . .

The UGCC website also repeated that the Vatican made this announcement today.

Oh, all right, I'm going to join all those here who have made critical comments about Pope Francis . . .

If His Holiness would like to really make valid and genuine the dialogue with the Orthodox, he MIGHT begin by showing the fullest possible respect for the Particularity of the UGCC and other Churches which are ALREADY in communion with him.

Just a thought . . .

But, AXIOS to the new bishop-elect.

Dear DMD,

Yes, thank you - that is an important point that has been overlooked here.

The Bishop-elect, an EC, studied at St Vladimir's Orthodox seminary where he had Orthodox colleagues.

That, in and of itself, is very positive and hopeful insofar as it shows that an EC Hierarch could have his theological formation influenced by studies at an Orthodox seminary - something that would have been unheard of not too long ago.

When the differences between Byzantine Catholicism and Orthodoxy are examined through the prism of their shared spiritual, theological and canonical traditions - the differences appear to be almost just semantic (save, of course, for the issue of the papacy - which EC's too can and have recast in "Eastern" terms).

The relationships between EC's, RC's and Orthodox that have developed in this ecumenical interplay have nothing in them of the to-and-fro that one can find among converts who define faith in "seige mentality" terms - on all sides. And that is a good thing.

The bishop-elect's experiences in this respect bode very well for his future leadership role not only within the UGCC but also in the Catholic-Orthodox dialogue.

Thank you, once again, sir!

Indeed. smile

Personally, I'm rather hoping all the non-Parman posts get moved en masse to a new thread.

Axios! Axios! Axios!

May God grant Bishop=elect Bohdan many years in His service!

(A reminder - as David noted, the purpose of this thread is to commemorate the announcement that Father Bohdan is to be elevated to the episcopate. Any discussion that is unrelated to that belongs elsewhere! I have moved those unrelated posts to here.)
