Dear Bob,

Good, I was beginning to think that this parish had invented the practice of not feeding the people it doesn't like ;\) .

And Great Lent sounds like a wonderful time to do as you suggest - besides, since we're fasting, we won't mind not being served in the church hall . . .

My mother in law receives one or two calls from the Women's League a day now and those that are in the "struggle" don't want her to resign (she already has). And after this Sunday, they won't be attending this parish for a few weeks at least.

Yesterday, one of her friends called to say that she approached the pastor to remind him that he has to celebrate a DL for my mother in law (that she has already given a stipend for).

He shot back at her, "And are you her spokesperson now?"

I told my mother in law that such a comment probably means that Father is not happy with her . . . ;\)

In fact, he blames HER and not my father in law for his resignation!

He assumes that my father in law will only do as he is told by his wife (and this from the way my father in law is "cordially urged" to get up and help with the dishes following the many dinners at which Father was a guest . . .).

It's getting to be a bit much having to listen to this every day, but can't say as it isn't better than any TV soap opera.

Our nuns have stopped attending the parish, the bishop didn't come (as is his custom) - something is afoot in a big way and no one knows exactly what will happen next . . .

Alex

ALEX:

The pastor is the bishop's delegate to the parish. Does the man not have the guts to stop into the parts of his portion of the Vineyard to check on what's going on? Or does the bishop treat parishes like some sort of congregationalist set-up?

It occurred to me that it might be a spiritual benefit to "give up" going to this parish for Great Lent and Pascha. The "poison" you mention will only color their deriving any benefits from the wonderful atmosphere of the Lenten liturgical cycle. Let them all wonder. Also, get your inlaws a caller ID so they can refuse to answer the phone when they see a numbre from someone in the parish. Enough is enough.

In Christ,

BOB

Dear Bob,

You are so right (no wonder your parish priest doesn't like you - you are way too good for him and that parish!!).

My mother in law is into all this and is building up a crescendo of nervous energy that will come to a head this Sunday during the parish league's AGM.

But it has taken its toll on both of them - and on me, as I'm still depressed about the Theophany celebrations there.

You are right - this is no good for anyone's spiritual equilibrium.

Happily, they have decided to stay away for a few weeks after this Sunday. Surely, no one can deny them the intrigue of this Sunday's meeting . . . \:\)

Keep you posted!

Alex

ALEX:

I grew up in a parish where the priest used to preach that there were three classes of Catholics. And I was "third class": having a Protestant father and a Catholic mother and attending public school. We weren't really welcome in the place except that my grandparents were rather strong Catholics. In my hometown the Protestants didn't accept us because we were Catholics and the Catholics didn't really accept us because there was a lingering suspicion that we really weren't all in the fold. It didn't matter that I excelled in catechism classes all the way through high school. My regular confessor dropped me as far as support went when I went to a public university.

So I grew up being used to the idea that sometimes it is healthier to walk away from situations and not intrude where I wasn't really welcome. Small town; small minds; small vision.

Fortunately I had a strong, supportive family on my mother's side or God knows where I'd be today.

Maybe I'm too flip, but I've been known to say, "I've been thrown out of classier places than this!!" \:D \:D \:D And that really gets under the skin of the established figures.

Dear Bob,

Actually, the most zealous Catholics I've ever met had Protestantism in their background in one way or another!

Faith is ever more valid and vibrant when it costs us something.

Cheers,

Alex

Dear Friends,

While I'm at it, just a prayer of thanksgiving for the fact that the Rev. Father Superior in Winnipeg has settled the matter in our parish once and for all, bringing peace and harmony thereto.

We can now move forward with the new Pastor!
