Technically, we didn't see Mar Bawai concelebrating in those pictures, what we did see was His Grace co-Distributing the Eucharist.. However, I don't know if that makes any difference.
I understand the point of the altar girls scenario mentioned above, but ultimately it is the Bishop who will be judged regarding enforcement, or lack thereof, of the Canons not you or me. I think the same principle applies in regard to priests who repeatedly do their own thing at Mass, while it is important for the laity to push for their priest to be as close to the ideal as can be, ultimately he will answer for his action or inaction not us.

I am amazed at how very little press attention this matter has gotten.

I am amazed at how very little press attention this matter has gotten. Are you kidding? How often does news favorable to the Catholic Church get media attention? Even when a new Pope is elected, all sorts of disparaging commentary arises. How often do the Christians of the Middle East get any coverage at all? That these developments may bring Iraqi Christians into closer unity is probably thought of in American "news" rooms to be a great horror. If Patriarch Alexei of Moscow appeared at St. Peter's on Ash Wednesday and knelt before Benedict XVI to receive ashes, it might get mentioned on page 37, on the next Sunday, if the paper publishes religious items at all. It would, of course, be a bigger news item in Moscow.
The mainstream press being what it is, I have come to not expect much coverage. And to count on what little is offered as being not terribly accurate or well written.
I am not expecting the front page of the NY Post or Times here... Really I am more befuddled by even the blogosphere and the Catholic online newsoutlets and other religous news and discussiong outlets.
Maybe simply too many are unaware of Assyrian/Chaldean communities and so they don't make a blip on the radar in the same fashion that the slew of high profile Episcopal bishops and Evangelical pastors & theologians have...

Are the Assyrians and the Syrians a spelling difference? (explanation snipped)
Thanks. Wow.
We rent our church to Syrians on Sunday afternoons (we're in Las Vegas). They are apparently coming back into communion with Rome diocese by diocese (which would be consistent with the article). (This rental has the full support of both the RC and BC bishop). I'm having problems following your logic here. What does the rental of your church premises have to do with entry into communion? As to "support", the Code of Canon Law permits bishops to allow Non-Catholics (including even those of non-Apostolic Churches) to use Catholic church premises for their services under various circumstances. Doing so has nothing to do with the issue of communion.
The rental and communion are separate issues. The rental to non-catholics, even with the full and explicit support of our BC and the local RC bishops, still apparently ruffled a couple of feathers.
This type of Syrian (which is what I believe they are) was reentering communion bishop by bishop.
Thanks again,
hawk

Glory be to Jesus Christ!! glory be to Him forever and ever!!! If Patriarch Alexei of Moscow appeared at St. Peter's on Ash Wednesday My guess is that, in a spirit of humility and penance, Pope Benedict would ask Patriarch Alexei to impose ashes on him first. In Christ, BOB
You may be right about that, Bob.
But even that probably would not be reported.

Shlomo Hawk,
Were in Las Vegas do the Syriacs rent from your Church. As a Maronite our Liturgies are nearly identical, and I always like to help out my fellow Syriacs when I can.

Dear Griego Catolico,
Thank you very much for your prayers.
I am sorry that I was not able to elucidate on the issue regarding the issue of the co-celebration of the Holy Mystery. It is something that I hadn't thought too much about.
I just wanted to add something that I thought was really nice about our two parishes in San Jose. There is a Rogation of the Ninevites {a three day fast/prayer event starting on Monday and ending on Wednesday} in our tradition, followed by a day of Thanksgiving. For many years {maybe 15?} our two parishes have gathered together during this event. I think I recall that the Eucharist was not co-celebrated, but instead our two parishes alternated in congregating between our Church and the Chaldean Church on the Wednesday and Thursday of these days.
I thank God that our parishes had such a tie between us. In honesty I can say that we felt as one community and that bond meant that we treated each other as brothers/sisters. This has helped us immensely in that we never felt like strangers towards each other.
Thank you for your prayers, and everyone else as well. In this trying time, prayers from all are very much appreciated and needed. We, those involved in this matter personally, for our part, must be diligent and careful in trying to remain in the path that our Lord gives us... keeping in mind always to live in Love and not allow hate to have an entry into our hearts.
Lord have mercy on us, Anthony
