Pope sends message of solidarity to Iraqi Christians

Baghdad, Jan. 10, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI has conveyed his concern and solidarity for the Christians of Iraq, after a new series of bombings at churches there.

In a telegram to Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Emmanuel III Delly, signed by Cardinal Tarcision Bertone in his role as the Vatican Secretary of State, the Holy Father denounced the bombings that have targeted Catholic churches in Baghdad, Mosul, and Kirkuk this week. He promised his prayers for peace and assured the Iraqi prelate of his "heartfelt solidarity" with the embattled Christian communities.

The Pope urged "all those in authority to renew efforts toward peaceful negotiations aimed at a just resolution of the country's difficulties, respectful of the rights of all."

The Spirit of Truth

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, You are everywhere present and fill all things. Treasury of Blesings and Giver of Life, come and dwell within us, cleanse us of all stain, and save our souls, O Good One.

Hymn from the Vespers of Pentecost

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

Every day you provide your bodies with good to keep them from failing. In the same way your good works should be the daily nourishment of your hearts. Your bodies are fed with food and your spirits with good works. You aren't to deny your soul, which is going to live forever, what you grant to your body, which is going to die.
