Iraq: overflow Easter crowd at site of October massacre

CWNews.com - So many Catholics attended Easter Sunday Mass at Baghdad’s Syrian Catholic cathedral that the number of Masses had to be increased from one to three, according to Aid to the Church in Need. The cathedral was the site of an October 31 massacre that left 58 dead.

In Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, Holy Thursday evening Mass was canceled because of a curfew, and the Easter Vigil Mass was canceled because of fears for the safety of parishioners. Numerous Catholics attended the Good Friday service, some walking more than an hour after authorities forbade cars in some areas of the city amid security fears.

Peace and Resurrection are Yours!

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down Death by death, and to those in the tombs bestowing life! (Troparion)

You descended into the tomb, O Immortal. You destroyed the power of Death. You arose as a victor, O Christ God. You announced to the women bearing ointment: “Rejoice!” You gave peace to Your apostles and resurrection to the Fallen. (Kontakion)

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

When you are praying alone, and your spirit is dejected, and you are wearied and oppressed by your loneliness, remember then, as always, that God the Trinity looks upon you with eyes brighter than the sun; also all the angels, your own Guardian Angel, and all the Saints of God. Truly they do; for they are all one in God, and where God is, there are they also. Where the sun is, thither also are directed all its rays. Try to understand what this means.
