The Melkite Patriarch of Antioch is based in Damascus, Syria. Melkites are Greek Catholics (Byzantine Catholics) and are Greek Orthodox Christians who entered into full communion with Rome in 1729. There are about 1.6 million Melkites worldwide, of which about 90% living in the Middle East.
