ANNOUNCEMENTS
from Holy Transfiguration Monastery
1. As of February 2, 2011, the Hieromonk Theodore is the Hegumen (Superior) of the Monastery. The Hieromonk Joseph, Abbot of the Monastery since October 6, 1999, is now the Abbot Emeritus and resides at the Monastery, living a semi-eremitical monastic life. Father Theodore will be the Superior until our Bishop returns to preside over an election, at which an Abbot will be duly elected and given the benediction to assume his office with full canonical authority.
2. We would like to set the record straight on another point. There has evidently been some confusion in the minds of some people as to our relationship with Holy Transfiguration Skete, aka the Society of St. John, located in Eagle Harbor, Michigan. There is no canonical relationship between our monastery and theirs. They are neither a foundation of ours nor a federated house. This was confirmed in a conversation with our Bishop during his visitation on December 14, 2010, in light of certain issues that arose some months earlier, which made us aware that some people were laboring under a misunderstanding. The monks of the Skete received some formation in the Byzantine Tradition here as a condition for their acceptance as a monastic community in our eparchy, and their priests were ordained here. (It seems that Archimandrite Boniface considered himself a sort of overseer of their Byzantine monastic practice, but he did not have the responsibility of a canonical superior, nor did his successor here at Mt Tabor.) They were an existing community before they met us, and they now exist independently of us, being under the sole jurisdiction of the Bishop of the St Nicholas Eparchy in Chicago for the Ukrainians.
