Phoenix - AZ (12/05/200) - Today our Holy Father John
Paul II has accepted the resignation of His Grace, the Most Reverend George
Martin Kuzma as Bishop of the Eparchy of Van Nuys. His resignation was
accepted in conformity to Canon 210.
With the acceptance of Bishop George's resignation, the See of Van Nuys is
vacant. Bishop George is no longer to be commemorated at Divine Services.
When the See is declared vacant, the Protosyncellus and
Syncelli immediately cease to hold office (Canon 224).
According to Canon 221, §§2 until an Administrator is elected, the See is
governed by the College of Eparchial Consultors which is presided over by
the senior Consultor in ordination who in our case is Archpriest Michael
Moran (Canon 271, §§5).
The Consultors must meet within 8 days or by next Tuesday, December 12th to
elect an Administrator otherwise the Metropolitan is to appoint an
Administrator (Canon 221, §§3 and 4).
Prior to leaving for Uniontown, Bishop George called a meeting of Consultors
for December 7th at 11:00 AM MST at the Pastoral Center in Phoenix without
expressing the reason or giving an agenda. The purpose of this meeting is
now clear-to elect an Administrator.
Bishop George has been our Shepherd for almost 10 years. His love for
Christ, our Church and our Eparchy has been very apparent over the years. We
wish him well in retirement at Mount Macrina Manor.
May the Lord God grant to Bishop George, peace, health and happiness for
many blessed years! |
