Lebanon on October 13.
Dated October 20, and written
in French, the Pope writes: "In sending you my warmest congratulations,
I welcome with all my heart, beloved brother in Jesus Christ, your request
for ecclesiastical communion. I am sure that ... Your Beatitude will know
how to lead the Church entrusted to you on the path of the Gospel, lived,
celebrated and announced with confidence."
"To you and to all
the members of the Holy Synod," the Holy Father concludes his brief message,
"to the priests religious and faithful of your patriarchate, I extend my
affectionate apostolic blessing."
Also made public was a telegram
from Pope John Paul to His Beatitude Ignace Antoine II Hayek, former patriarch
of Antioch of the Syrians. He writes, in part: "I wish to tell you of my
deep gratitude for the ecclesial service which you have given during these
many years as father and head of the 'sui iuris' Syrian-Catholic Church,
in exercising this high duty of strengthening the flock entrusted to you
in the Middle East and in the countries of the diaspora."
