Noted Theologian To Speak in Pittsburgh at 3rd Annual “SS Cyril and Methodius Lecture”
 

Pittsburgh, PA (02/17/2003) - Dean Emeritus of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Scarsdale NY, the Very Reverend Thomas Hopko, will address the 3rd Annual SS. Cyril and Methodius Lecture on May 5, 2003 at St. Paul’s Seminary in Pittsburgh.

Father Hopko holds the rank of Protopresbyter in the Orthodox Church in America and is now in his 40th year of priestly service. In his years of ministry, Father Hopko served as pastor of churches in Ohio and New York, and as rector of Three Hierarchs Chapel at St. Vladimir’s Seminary from 1992 to 2002. He likewise taught courses in dogmatic theology, practical theology, homiletics, and spirituality at the seminary and served as Dean from September 1992 until retiring in July 2002.

Very Rev. Thomas Hopko

Father Hopko has published widely, writing books and countless articles in journals, magazines, encyclopedias, and newspapers.

Father Hopko has served as Delegate from the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church to the World Council of Churches Assembly in Uppsala, 1968, and as Delegate from the Orthodox Church in America to the WCC Assemblies in Nairobi, 1974. He was a member of the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission 1975-1991, also serving as a member of the Faith and Order Standing Commission and Chairman of the Faith and Order Commission Steering Group on Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM), 1985-199l. From 1992 to 1995 he was President of the Orthodox Theological Society in America.

Father Hopko and his wife, the former Anne Schmemann, have five children and fourteen grandchildren and now live in Ellwood City, PA. Father Hopko continues to work for St. Vladimir Seminary through writing, speaking, organizing conferences and retreats, and assisting in the work of the seminary’s office of advancement, recruitment and public relations.

The SS. Cyril and Methodius Lecture is sponsored by Pittsburgh’s Byzantine Catholic Seminary of SS. Cyril, and Methodius. Previous lecturers have included the Right Reverend Archimandrite Robert Taft and Bishop Kallistos of Diokleia.
