Release: For Immediate Release
The Byzantine Catholic Seminary of SS. Cyril and Methodius (Pittsburgh, PA)
has recently been authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to
become a degree granting institution offering both Master of Divinity and
Master of Arts in Theology degrees. The Seminary is now prepared to seek
accreditation from The Association of Theological Schools.
About the announcement, Very Reverend Archpriest John G. Petro, Rector of
the seminary, said, “This is the culmination of years of hard work by many
individuals. I especially wish to thank the seminary’s Advisory Board for
their steadfast encouragement and the current staff for their invaluable
assistance. Together with our successful 50th anniversary fund development
campaign, this authorization positions the seminary for a strong future.”
The Seminary, founded in 1950, prepares men for the priestly ministry to the
Byzantine Catholic Church of North America through an integrated program of
intellectual, spiritual and pastoral formation. It is governed by a Board of
Directors headed the Metropolitan Basil M Schott, Metropolitan Archbishop of
Pittsburgh.
In addition to its own School of Theology, the Seminary provides formation
for resident college seminarians who study at local colleges and
universities, and the programs of the Seminary are, likewise, open to
qualified off campus students, men and women, lay and religious. The
Seminary is affiliated with Duquesne University of Pittsburgh, as well,
where students may earn a Master of Arts degree in theology. Duquesne
students also cross-register for classes at the seminary to study the
theology of the Byzantine Churches.
